Sexual Health and Sexual Rights: Celebrating World Sexual Health Day

4 September, 2018

In 2010, the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) called all their organisations to celebrate, on each September 4th, World Sexual Health Day in an effort to promote a greater social awareness on sexual health across the globe. The theme for 2018 is ‘Sexual health and sexual rights are fundamental for wellbeing’.

Reproductive Health Matters promotes universal sexual health and sexual rights. Our open access, peer-reviewed journal publishes research, in-depth analysis and critical reviews across the spectrum of SRHR, generating knowledge and evidence and inspiring new thinking and action. You can see a number of our papers related to sexuality and sexual rights on our website, as well as a list of related papers below.

In this video, Pedro Nobre, President of WAS, shares his message on World Sexual Heath day 2018.

“As President of the World Association for Sexual Health, I would like to welcome you all to celebrate World Sexual Health Day.

The World Association for Sexual Health is a global, international organization that represents over 100 societies at a national level of several countries across the globe, representing thousands of professionals, clinicians and researchers that work in the sexual health and sexual rights field.

Since 2010, our organization started to celebrate every year, on 4 September, World Sexual Health Day. And the idea is exactly to bring awareness of the importance of sexual health and sexual rights for all.

Sexual health is not only the absence of sexual problems or sexual dysfunctions. Sexual health is a more complex and multidimensional phenomenon that includes physical, mental and social wellbeing related to sexual health and sexuality.

As you all may know, unfortunately, there are a number of places around the world in countries where sexual health and sexual rights are at risk or are in danger. So that’s why it’s so important for us and for all the community of people and professionals, to celebrate every year, on the 4th of September, sexual health and sexual rights for all. So please join us in celebrating World Sexual Health Day”.
